Chapter 16: The Ledger

Averett hit the canvas on his stomach with Jarek's whole weight covering his back.

A white flash lit the high window.

Then another, and another, until the gym shuddered with them.

"Stay flat," Jarek said into his ear. "Don't lift your head."

"They'll see us anyway," Averett whispered.

"They can see the ring. They can't see the faces."

"That's a very optimistic view of photography," Averett said.

"Shut up, Averett."

Something thudded on the street door.

Footsteps hit the pavement outside, a lot of them, and a voice shouted, "Heir's here! Get the door!"

The metal door shook in its frame.

Jarek was on his feet in one move, dragging Averett up with him.

He shoved him into the shadow behind the corner post of the ring.

"Get your clothes on," Jarek said.

"What are you going to do?" Averett asked.

"What I'm good at."

He pulled his shirt over his head, took one of the heavy training bells off the rack, and walked toward the door.

The door opened before he got there.

It did not open to a photographer.
