Chapter 10: Draw 23

I woke Bixby by putting the page on his chest.

He opened his eyes and looked at it, and I watched his face change before his hands even moved.

"Where did you get that?"

"Your coat."

"Nina..."

"It's my husband's handwriting. Draw twenty-three. Titer rising. Subject unaware."

I turned it to the light.

"There are two letters in the corner. Very small. N.H."

Bixby sat up slowly on the leather couch.

Gray dawn came through the gaps in the boards, and he looked as old as I had ever seen him.

"Those are your initials," he said.

"I know what they are."

"I wasn't sure what they meant. I found that in a lab bag on Day Six, in a trunk at the back of the clinic, from a technician who came to me dying and didn't last the night."

"A technician from Calvin's lab."

"I believe so."

Jonas came in from the lobby door with the hatchet in his hand and his hair wet from the pump.

He stopped when he saw my face.

"What is it?"

"Harlan has something to tell me," I said. "And he's going to say it properly."

Bixby reached for his missing glasses and found his pocket empty.

"It's a guess," he said. "I'm an old country doctor. I don't know what any of that means. A number and a word."

I crossed the room and took his wrist in my hand.

I did not need to ask a second time.

*She is the cure. Her blood is the serum. I worked it out a week after I found that page, and I was afraid to say it to her face.*

I stood very still.

The stone fireplace was cold.

The pines outside the boards swayed against the gray light.

Bixby's pulse beat under my fingers, rabbit-quick and light.

"It's not a guess," I said.
