Chapter 31: Outside the Gate
I walked out across the gravel at eleven in the morning with my left sleeve rolled to the shoulder.
Nobody stopped me.
Forty volunteers lined the inside of the wall with rifles, and Jonas stood on the walkway above the gate with the sergeant, his sling gone and a rifle braced on the rail.
I had asked him to stay up there.
"I'm telling you," I had said. "It's the only way I'm walking out alone."
He had held my face in both hands for a count of five and let go.
Now the gate stood ahead of me, twelve feet of timber and steel.
Beyond it, through the gaps in the planks, I could hear the dead.
They had been gathering since dawn, drawn by the speaker on the tower.
Hundreds of them stood in the road with their faces turned up to the noise.
Calvin waited at the foot of the gate.
He wore the same white coat, gray now with road dust.
In his right hand was a syringe gun, and his left rested on the winch lever, an iron arm as long as my leg.
The water truck stood behind him with its engine running.
"Darling," he said.
"Calvin."
"You came alone."
"You asked."
"And your sleeve." His eyes went to my bare arm and shone. "Thank you. Thank you. I'll be quick."
"Take three tubes," I said. "Then close the gate."
"Of course."
I stopped an arm's length from him and held out my wrist.
He took it in his left hand, and his voice came up behind my ears.
*I take all six and leave the gate open. The dead will cover the truck.*
I turned my head and spoke up toward the wall, loud enough for forty rifles to hear.
"He's going to take six tubes, not three. And he's going to leave the gate open behind him."
