Chapter 11: The Doctor

Hannah's POV

The doctor met me at eight o'clock in a small consulting room on the third floor.

Seth walked me to the door and went to wait in the hall.

She was a tall woman in her fifties with gray hair pinned up, and she shook my hand with both of hers.

"Mrs. Winchell," she said. "I wondered if I would see you."

"You know why I'm here."

"I can guess."

I put the envelope on her desk.

She looked at it for a moment, and then she looked at me, and her face was full of something I had not seen on any doctor's face for four years.

It was guilt.

"I'll tell you what I can," she said. "Your husband's privacy is protected by law. I can't discuss his file without his consent."

"I have his file," I said. "I found it."

"Then I can tell you what I would tell any woman holding that envelope."

She folded her hands.

"I asked him to tell you three times in writing and twice in person," she said. "The last time I told him that I would not sign off on another cycle for you until he did."

"But you did."

"You were already in treatment. You were already so hopeful." Her voice dropped. "I should have refused to treat you without telling you. I have thought about that for four years. I am so sorry."

I had come in angry, and I had expected to stay angry.

Instead my eyes burned.

"Four years," I said. "I took every shot. I apologized to him."

"I know."
