Chapter 12: In the Lot
Dylan saw the envelope in my hand, and his face changed.
"Where did you get that?" he said.
"From our hall closet. It was under my records."
"That's private." He took a step toward me, and Seth moved between us without hurrying.
"Back up, Dylan," Seth said.
"This is none of your business."
"I think it became my business when you texted me about a folder."
Dylan ignored him and looked at me over Seth's shoulder.
"Give me the folder, Hannah. It's mine. It has my name on it."
"It has your signature on it," I said. "The doctor says it's mine now, to do what I want with."
"She had no right."
"She asked you five times to tell me."
He opened his mouth and found nothing to say.
Sheridan stepped in, soft and sorry, and laid a hand on his sleeve.
"Dylan," she said. "Let's not do this in a parking lot."
"Then where?" I asked. "At your table? In my robe?"
She smiled sadly.
"Hannah," she said, "we're both worried about you. You're under so much stress, and a baby..."
"There is a baby," I said. "I'm not going to pretend there isn't."
"I never said that."
"He did."
I turned to Dylan.
"You said it couldn't be yours," I said. "You said it on the porch. You asked me whose it was, and you knew the whole time how rare it was and how it happens."
"I didn't know it could," he said hoarsely.
"You knew. The doctor wrote it on your own report."
He looked at the paper in my hand, and something went out of his shoulders.
