Chapter 20: Everything
Dylan's POV
The house was very quiet on Friday morning, and I sat in the kitchen with the March fourteenth page on the table.
I had not slept.
I had read that page forty times, and each time the date stayed the same.
At eight o'clock I called Sheridan.
She picked up on the second ring, bright as ever.
"There he is. Did you get my text about brunch?"
"You booked the suite in March," I said.
The line went quiet.
"Who told you that?"
"The inn did. With our card. You told me you thought of it in the car."
"Dylan, honey," she said, in the voice I had trusted for fifteen years. "Let me explain. I needed you to see what you were getting. She'd have kept you in that house forever, with her pity and her needles. I gave you a way out."
"A way out."
"I gave you a night when you got to be wanted. Don't act like you didn't enjoy it."
I held the phone away from my ear and looked at it.
I had said a dozen times that Sheridan was the fun one.
It had never occurred to me to ask who the fun was for.
"You knew about the clinic," I said. "You knew four years. And you told Hannah to stay home and read a book."
"I was protecting your pride."
"You were keeping her out of the room."
"Call it what you like," Sheridan said, a little sharply. "The point is, you're free now."
"I'm not free," I said. "I'm alone in a house I'm trying to sell to hurt my wife."
I hung up on her.
My hands were shaking, so I put them flat on the table until they stopped.
