Chapter 5: I Object

"Hannah!" Sheridan called, bright and warm. "You made it!"

Every head in the chapel turned.

Twelve phones swung toward the back pew, and the officiant lowered his book.

Dylan went white.

I stood up.

"Don't mind me," I said. "I'm only here to object."

Nobody laughed this time.

I walked up the aisle with my phone still filming.

My heels were loud on the old boards, and no one tried to stop me.

"Hannah," Dylan said. He took a step down from the altar. "What are you doing here?"

"You told me you were in Dayton."

"It's a dare," he said quickly. "It's April Fool's. It's a joke, babe."

"I know it's a dare. I heard you accept it."

His mouth opened and shut.

"Last night," I said. "At the club. Through the door."

A woman in the second row put her hand over her mouth.

"I heard Sheridan say no calls to me," I said. "I heard you say yes. I heard you tell your friends I'd forgive you for anything because I'm so grateful you stayed."

Dylan looked at his friends.

None of them looked back.

"That's taken out of context," he said.

I held up my phone.

I had the recording ready, and I pressed play, and his voice filled the little chapel.

"She's not going anywhere. She needs me a lot more than I need her."

Then I stopped it.

The silence afterward was total.

Sheridan recovered first.

"Hannah, sweetheart," she said, stepping toward me with her hands open. "We were all just playing. It's what we do. Come sit with me, please, and let's laugh about this."
