Chapter 4: The Man at the Curb

Alister came home at six, exactly as the sticky note had promised.

I was in the bedroom with a suitcase open on the bed.

He stood in the doorway and watched me fold a sweater.

"You're really doing this."

"I'm staying at Maeve's for a few weeks," I said. "Until the gala."

"Lena." He crossed the room and put his hand over mine on the sweater. "You're upset about last night. I understand. But don't move out over a dinner."

"It wasn't the dinner."

"Then tell me what it was."

I looked at his face. It was calm and patient, and it was the face I had loved for seven years.

Roses pressed against his ankles, so thick now that he stood in a red hedge.

"You didn't ask why," I said. "When I told you in the car. You didn't ask."

He took his hand back.

"I assumed it was the dinner."

"You assumed."

"What else would I assume?" He spread his hands. "I've been home every night. I've never raised my voice. Everything I own is in your name. What did I do?"

It was a good speech.

I zipped the suitcase.

"Stay until the gala," he said. "For appearances. Our donors will be watching. Carina's name is on the line, and so is mine."
