Chapter 20: The Iron Gate
Jude crossed the narrows on foot with Marina beside him and nothing in his hands.
The tall rider stood at the base of the boulder with forty rifles behind him, every barrel trained on the falls.
"If it goes wrong, shoot the powder," Jude told him.
"Not the man."
"Sir, that will..."
"Bring the pass down on all of us, I know," Jude said.
"It will bring it down on him as well."
The tall rider swallowed and nodded.
Jude and Marina walked on.
The waterfall hissed against the black rock.
Spray beaded on Corwin's gray beard as they came up, and the twenty men behind him did not move.
Up close the gate was bigger than Jude had pictured.
It stood twelve feet high, set into a slot of living stone.
It had rivets as wide as his hand and a seam down the center where the leaves met.
No handle, no lock.
