Chapter 24: The Seat
The Council met in the Hollow at ten the next morning, because no one wanted to carry the question anywhere else.
Two hundred of the sect filled the long hall under the mountain.
The rest stood on the stair and in the sun beyond the gate.
Someone had swept the floor and scrubbed the black stain from the stone beside the crack.
Someone else had laid a plain bunch of pine over the lip, and nobody had said who.
Lamps burned in every niche.
In daylight the chair looked different.
It was not as high as it had seemed.
The carved arms were rough and unworn.
Jude stood at the foot of it in his black coat with the cairn on the collar and the ring in his pocket.
Marina stood beside him in her nurse's white, because she had come from the ward.
The quartermaster's sister had been chosen to preside, and she rapped the floor with a borrowed cane.
"The Cairn Sect has an empty Seat," she said.
