Chapter 6: The First Morning

The gray light came through the curtains and laid itself across the bed. Celia woke inside the heat of him. His arm was heavy over her ribs, his chest solid against her spine, and his breath moved slow against the back of her neck. She did not move. Her body knew the shape of his body now. Her thighs remembered the weight of him. Her throat remembered the sound she had made when he said her name.

Celia Hargrove.

She had come here to kill him. She had let him inside her instead. And he had known her. Since she was nineteen. Seven years of watching. Seven years of keeping other people's knives out of her back. She could still feel the tears dried tight on her cheeks. She did not know what to do with any of it.

His arm tightened. He was awake.

'You're thinking too loud,' he said, and his voice was rough with sleep. Low. Warm against her ear.

She did not turn around. 'I don't think loud. I think quiet.'

'You think like a woman planning an exit.'

She felt the words in her chest. He was not wrong. She had been mapping the room. The window. The door. The distance to the knife she had left on the floor two nights ago. But she had not moved.

'Breakfast,' he said.

She turned her head just enough to see him. His hair was black and messy against the pillow. His jaw was shadowed. His eyes were hazel in the gray light, and they were already watching her.
