Chapter 9: The Study
The door had barely clicked shut behind Marcus when James crossed the room. He did not speak. He took her wrist, his grip sure and warm, and pulled her after him down the hall. Her boots made no sound on the polished wood. His did. She let him lead. That was the first thing she noticed. That she let him.
The study was dark. He did not turn on a light. The only illumination came through the tall windows, the city throwing its cold silver glow across the desk, the leather chair, the shelves of books she had not noticed before. He locked the door. The sound was small and final.
Then he turned, and the distance between them closed in two steps.
Her back hit the edge of the desk. Not hard. Deliberate. His body came against hers, chest to chest, and the heat of him was immediate, a wall of muscle and dark suit and the faint clean smell of soap from the shower, hours old now, mixed with something sharper underneath. Whiskey. He had drunk whiskey at dinner. She could taste it on his breath without tasting him.
'You have been quiet all evening,' he said.
His voice was low, the words pressed into the space between their mouths. His hands came to her hips, not gripping, just resting there, thumbs hooked into the waistband of her jeans. The touch sent a line of heat down through her stomach, low and immediate.
'You were busy lying to your friend,' she said.
'I was not lying.'
'You told him we sparred.'
'We did.' His mouth curved, that razor smile, gone as fast as it came. 'I simply did not tell him what kind of sparring.'
She should have had a retort. She had nothing. His thumbs moved, a slow circle over the jut of her hip bones, and her breath went shallow before she could stop it.
