Chapter 15: Two Months Too Late

Becky's POV

I looked at Hamish for a long time.

Then I looked at Virginia, who had just said "July" in front of a witness.

"You knew in July," I said.

"Rebecca, you need to be in bed."

"You knew in July that it was still going on, and you sent her to my shower in September."

"I sent a photographer to take pictures of a family," Virginia said. "What Russell does in private is Russell's concern."

"It was my nursery."

She had nothing to say to that, which I had never seen before.

I pushed the call button on the wall beside me and held it down.

"Security to the fourth floor," I told the voice that answered. "Two people here are not on my visitor list."

Russell began to speak, and I held up my hand, and he stopped.

It took the guard four minutes to walk them to the elevator.

Virginia went without a word, with the gift bag swinging from her hand.

Russell looked back once.

I let him look, and I didn't look back.

When the elevator doors closed I turned to Hamish.

"Come in here," I said. "Not inside the room. Here, by the window."

We stood at the end of the hall beside a plant that someone had forgotten to water.

He kept his hands at his sides, and he didn't say anything.

"Twice," I said.

"Twice that I saw him with her. The first time I only saw the car."

"The first time was July."

"Yes."

"You held my foot on my sister's steps at two in the morning, and you did not tell me that."

"I know."

"Why not?"

He looked at me directly.

I'd been waiting for him to explain, and I had a speech ready for whatever he said.
