At 34 Weeks Pregnant, I Found My Husband Kissing Her in Our Baby's Nursery novel · Chapter 9 of 24

Chapter 9: Old Tenderness

By midnight the contractions had stopped.

A nurse in teal scrubs adjusted the drip in my arm and said the medicine would slow things down until my son was a little older.

"Thirty-five weeks is early but not terrible," she said. "We'd rather keep him in a few more days. You're staying with us."

Tamara had slept in the chair with her coat over her knees, and I had not slept at all.

At four in the morning my phone lit up on the blanket.

I'm not on the clock, so you're allowed to ignore this, Hamish had written. Heard what you did at the gala. Everyone on the street has heard. Are you and the baby okay?

I typed, Contractions stopped. Hospital for a few days.

He answered, Do you want me to bring anything?

I looked at the ceiling and the little green light on the monitor.

Coffee. Not for me. For Tamara. And a charger.

Porch rule applies to hospitals, he wrote. I'll leave it at the desk.

I smiled in the dark.

I did it without meaning to, and I put the phone face down on the blanket in case my sister woke up and asked.

Russell came at ten.

He was clean-shaven, in a gray suit, with a paper cup in each hand, and he looked like he had not slept since the gala.

He stood in the doorway for a while and did not come in.

"Can I?" he said.

"Tamara's getting breakfast. You have a few minutes."

He sat in the chair by the window and held the paper cups in his lap.

"I ended it," he said. "I told Kelsey to pack her studio. I told my mother I won't speak to her if she keeps Kelsey in the family. I am done, Becky."
