Chapter 5: My Binders
Holbrook Homeworks started its day at seven in the yard behind the lumber shed, with coffee and a clipboard and twenty men standing around the trucks.
I walked in at five past seven with June's spare work gloves in my back pocket.
Nobody had seen me in the yard since the summer picnic.
The talking stopped.
The foreman looked up from his clipboard, and his face went pale.
"Morning," I said. "I need my binders."
My binders lived in the trailer office, on the shelf above Neil's desk.
There were nine years of them, one for every house we had ever sold, with my drawings in clear sleeves and my notes in the margins.
Neil had the trailer's one good chair.
I did not look at the chair.
I took the binders down eight at a time and carried them out to my car.
On the third trip, a younger carpenter held the trailer door for me.
On the fifth, two more men picked up a stack without being asked.
On the sixth, the whole yard was watching, and nobody pretended not to.
I set the last binder on the hood of my car and turned around.
"For anyone who doesn't know," I said, "I draw every room this company builds. Neil frames them. If a drawing has a T.M. in the corner, it's mine."
