Chapter 6: A Loan From a Friend

By Thursday afternoon my shop lived in June's barn.

The looms stood in a row under the rafters, the throws were stacked on hay bales under tissue, and a hand-lettered sign on a pallet said Loom & Lantern, back soon.

June was patching a loom bench with a screwdriver when Shelby's white car came up the gravel drive.

"Don't," June said.

"I know."

"I mean it. Don't be nice to her."

"I'm going to be exactly as nice as she is," I said.

Shelby climbed out with a paper bag in one arm and a large tote on the other.

She wore a camel coat and the plain gold ring.

"I brought soup," she said, and held up the bag. "Chicken and rice, the kind you had when you were sick sophomore year. And I brought you something else. Can we sit?"

We sat on a hay bale by the stove.

June went on patching, six feet away, with her back turned and her ears turned toward us.

Shelby laid a long envelope on my knee.

"Open it."

It was a cashier's check for twenty-five thousand dollars.

"What is this?" I said.

"It's your deposit. I felt sick about Neil's bridge." Her eyes were wet. "I called my bank this morning. I sold a few things. It's a loan, Beth, from me to you, and you can pay me back whenever you want. I just want you to get that studio."
