Chapter 8: What He Said on the Phone

I was on the bathroom floor at nine on Saturday morning when I heard his key in the front door.

I had been sick twice already.

My phone lay on the edge of the sink with the screen up.

I had not planned that.

I had been replaying Friday's video of the donor tour to see how the walnut wall looked in the light, and I had dropped the phone there to hold my hair.

Neil's footsteps crossed the living room.

He thought I was at the barn.

I knew that, because he was talking.

"Pick up, pick up," he muttered, and then a ringtone filled the apartment, and then Shelby's voice came out of his phone, loud and clear.

He had put her on speaker.

"You're not at the house," Shelby said.

"I came for clothes. Bethany's at June's. Shel, who is Evan?"

There was a pause.

I leaned over, touched the red circle on my screen, and sat very still.

The voice memo began to run.

"Where did you hear that name?" Shelby said.

"Mrs. Whoever, last night. She asked if he's on nights. You said always."

"Neil."

"I'm asking. Is there a guy?"

"There is a signature," Shelby said. "Evan is a doctor from the hospital board who co-signed my loan. He lives at the hospital, he's sixty years old in his head, and he's harmless. I keep him friendly until I can refinance."
