Chapter 15: The Key

Brett's POV

I never slept in Shelby's guest room that night, and at six I was standing in her kitchen with my duffel on the floor.

She came down in a robe with her hair in a clip.

"You're up early," she said. "I'll make eggs."

"Don't."

She stopped with her hand on the refrigerator.

"I'm leaving," I said. "I'm taking the bag. I'll finish whatever is left on the cabinets on my own time, and I'll send the bill to my own account."

"Brett."

"Lorena showed me the folder last night."

She did not ask which folder.

That was how I knew.

I had known Shelby since I was fourteen, and I had never once seen her not ask a question.

"I can explain," she said.

"Go ahead."

"I was so lonely." Her eyes filled all at once. "You don't know what the house was like after he left. I'd walk through the rooms and hear nothing. I called you because you were the only person who still picked up."

"You cropped Lorena's photos."

"I cut them down to what I saw. I thought if you saw it, you would finally talk to her. I was trying to make you two talk."

"You sent me a hotel receipt."

"It was there on the table. She was meeting him."

"She was pitching the lobby."

Shelby put her hand over her mouth, and tears ran down between her fingers.

I had watched that same face cry at her father's funeral.
