Chapter 18: You're Holding to the Terms?
The dining room waited.
The committee chair was looking at me, and so was the treasurer, and so were the two installers by the door.
Brett had gone rigid beside me.
He had promised me he wouldn't say a word about the baby, and I watched him keep that promise with his jaw clenched and his eyes fixed on the tablecloth.
I could have let the room guess.
Shelby wanted me to.
She wanted me to flinch, and crumble, and say I'd rather not.
"It's my husband's," I said.
My voice came out steady.
"I am five weeks pregnant. I learned it the morning of the auction, I bought socks on my lunch break, and I was going to tell him that night in our kitchen."
Nobody moved.
"I didn't, because Shelby had just spent twenty-five thousand dollars of his company's money on seven nights under her roof, and I didn't want him to stay because of a baby."
I turned my head and looked at Shelby.
"You saw the slip in my clutch. You knew everything you needed. You raised your paddle anyway."
Shelby's mouth opened and shut.
"This was mine to tell," I said. "You took it, and you tried to use it on me. That's the last thing you get."
The committee chair got up and came around the table.
She did not hug me, and she did not say anything kind.
She just laid her hand on my arm for a moment and let it rest there, and then she let go.
"Mr. Tolbert," she said, turning. "The annulled credit returns to the donor within ten business days."
"I know."
