Chapter 6: Seven Days, She Said

Brett's truck was parked in Shelby's driveway.

Her garage door stood open, and my husband's two toolboxes sat inside it.

I rang the bell.

Brett opened the door with paint on his shirt and his sleeves rolled to the elbow.

When he saw me, he looked back into the house before he looked at me.

"What are you doing here?"

"I came to see the charity project."

I walked past him.

Shelby sat at the kitchen island with two takeout boxes and a glass of wine.

She had changed out of the gold dress into jeans and a cream sweater.

A third plate was set out, and I knew who it was for.

She put her glass down.

"If you came to fight, can it wait until tomorrow? It's been a long day."

I took the receipt out of my purse and laid it on the island in front of her.

"Was raising your paddle that tiring?"

Shelby looked down at the page.

She wasn't surprised.

Brett crossed the kitchen and picked it up.

"Where did you get this?"

"Our family inbox."

"That's private. It's from the committee."

"It's a receipt with your name on it, sent to an account we share."

He read it and his face went hard.

"I was going to tell you."

"When? After the seven days?"

"When you'd calmed down."

I turned to Shelby.

"You knew he paid for your credit."

"Yes."

She didn't hesitate, and that scared me more than a lie would have.

"Did the two of you plan the package together?"

"The committee wrote the overnight rule," she said. "But I knew Brett was donating the bid."
