Chapter 17: Three Women and a Kotatsu
Reina Hanamori arrived at Haruka's apartment on Saturday afternoon carrying a stuffed toy the size of a small dog.
It was green, with wings.
Haruka's son took it from her, looked at it for a long time, and turned to his mother with deep disappointment.
"That's a dragon," he said.
"It's a dinosaur," said Reina.
"Dragons aren't real. Dinosaurs are real."
Reina looked at him.
"Then tell me which ones are real," she said, "and I'll write them down."
He told her. At length.
She took out her phone and typed them in, one by one, while he spelled the hard ones.
Haruka watched from the kitchen doorway with her arms folded and her mouth twitching.
"I've decided I like her," she said to Chiaki under her breath. "I hate that."
The three women sat at the kotatsu with their legs under the quilt and a bowl of mandarins in the middle.
Reina sat very straight.
She had never been under a kotatsu, she said, because her father thought they were for farmers.
"Your father," Chiaki said.
Reina peeled a mandarin in one long spiral, carefully, without breaking it.
