Chapter 18: The Ice Wall Cover
On Monday morning the cover was in every convenience store in Japan.
There was a stack of them in the lobby shop of the Tsukishiro Grand, right by the register, between the chewing gum and the umbrellas.
Haruka bought one on her way up to her first day on the 22nd floor.
She put it face down on Chiaki's desk without a word.
Then she went to her new desk by the window, sat down, and started reading expense reports with enormous concentration.
Chiaki turned it over.
Eight pages inside. Photographs of Kaname in front of three hotels, in a boardroom, on a balcony.
"The Ice Wall doesn't negotiate," one caption said. "He waits."
The article said a cool young vice-president had "steadily outmanoeuvred" a family sweets company for fourteen months.
Chiaki's name wasn't in it.
Hanamori was "the other side."
The other side had a negotiating team. It didn't have a face.
At the very end, there was a quote from Kaname.
"Every clause was argued properly," it said. "I respect the people across the table."
She read it four times.
