Chapter 18: The Bank on Trial
The board of Ellacombe Savings met on Thursday morning in the second-floor boardroom, under a portrait of the founder and a state seal.
Eleven directors sat around a long oak table in dark suits.
My father sat at the foot of it, shaved, in a borrowed jacket, with a trooper behind his chair.
The deputy commissioner took the head and laid a folder on the wood.
"The green ledger is missing," he said. "The trooper searched Mr. Ellacombe's desk on Monday afternoon. The drawer was empty."
A director cleared his throat.
"Then there's no proof of any of this."
"There's a witness," the deputy said, and looked at me.
I sat in a folding chair at the corner, beside Russell.
I had gotten there by asking one question, which was whether anyone at the bank could read my father's handwriting.
The answer had been no.
"Mrs. Dunleavy saw the book on September ninth," the deputy said. "She asks to be heard."
