Chapter 19: Russell's Offer
Russell did not sleep on Thursday night, and neither did I.
At seven on Friday morning, he sat at the kitchen table with a legal pad and drew a single line down the middle of it.
"The Stamford man will bid on Monday," he said.
"He buys the note cheap from the state and calls it the same day."
"Then the yard is his by Halloween."
"Yes."
"So I pay it first."
I put down my coffee.
"Two million dollars."
"Two million, in full, in cash, before he can bid. The state gets it on Monday, and it goes straight to the depositors."
"Russell, you don't have two million."
"I have the yard, forty trucks, and this house. Greenwich Trust will lend me the money against all three."
"And your guarantee."
"Yes."
"And if the yard has a bad winter, they take the house."
"Then I'll lose it," he said, "owing nobody on Putnam Avenue."
I looked at the pad.
At the bottom of the left column, he had written the name of the lawyer's firm.
At the bottom of the right, he had written mine.
"Deed," he said. "The yard and the house go in both our names."
