Chapter 21: Vivian Pays
St. Michael's was lit up for a wedding that was not going to happen.
I stood at the back on Friday night with Russell, in the last pew, where Margaret's friends had sat to watch me.
Three bridesmaids in pastel dresses waited near the altar.
The priest held a binder.
The sandy-haired young man stood at the front in a good blue suit, turning a ring box over in his hands.
Beside him, his father stood in the same camel overcoat I had seen at the board meeting.
The father was not smiling anymore.
Vivian came up the aisle alone, in a pale rehearsal dress, and nobody was giving her away.
She did not look at me.
She walked straight to the altar rail, and she stopped.
"Shall we begin?" said the priest.
"Not yet," the father said.
He pulled a letter from his coat.
"I had this at four o'clock. The state has frozen my accounts, and I'm named in a suit for two million six hundred thousand dollars."
"Do you know whose hole that is?"
