Chapter 18: The Note
I walked back up the steps onto the stage.
My father held his arms out a little.
I stopped in front of him and lifted the microphone.
"You're right," I said. "I should thank you."
Something hopeful moved across his face.
It was the worst thing I saw all night.
"Thank you for telling me what I cost," I said. "I always wondered. Three hundred thousand dollars. Memo, consulting. That's less than this tent."
Somebody at the crew tables let out a breath that was almost a laugh.
"Thank you for picking the room. You told him it had to be in front of people, so I'd want to disappear. I didn't disappear, Dad. I came back. And now it's in front of people again."
He lowered his arms.
"And thank you for my husband. You're right about that too. You picked the best man I've ever met." I looked out to the back of the tent, to the tall shape by the pole. "You just didn't know it. You thought you were selling me to a bank."
I turned to the crew tables.
