Chapter 21: Chapter 21
I got my dress zipped on the second try, and Devon got his shirt buttoned wrong.
The mirror showed my hair, and a flower petal stuck to my shoulder.
"Don't," I whispered, when he reached for the knob.
"She knocked three times."
"She'll knock six."
I fixed his buttons from the bottom up, plucked the petal off my dress, and opened the door.
My mother stood in the corridor in her good wool coat, holding a canvas bag in both hands.
She was fifty-six, a nurse from Sacramento, and she had driven four hours in the dark to stand there.
She looked at my face, then at Devon's, then at his wrong collar.
"Hello, sweetheart," she said. "You sang beautifully."
"Mom. You saw it?"
"I watched it on my phone in a parking garage. I couldn't find the entrance." She turned. "You're Devon."
