"I'll bring him," I said.
"You do that." Brian's voice went soft, almost kind. "And Erin? Pack a bag before Tuesday. Save yourself the walk of shame."
He hung up.
Down the hall, Liam's music thumped through his door.
I forwarded the call log to Sebastian.
He called back in two minutes.
"Emergency custody," he said. "On a sixteen-year-old and a fifteen-year-old."
"He says the kids will testify."
"They probably will." He was quiet a second. "Erin. Do you want to fight for them?"
I looked at the pictures in the hall. The ones that had shaken when Liam slammed his door.
"Can I ask you something instead?"
"Go."
"Does the judge have to look at money at a custody hearing?"
I could hear him start to smile.
"If somebody puts it in front of her."
The family court on Tuesday was on the fourth floor, with brown carpet and a flag in the corner.
Brian sat at the other table in his navy suit.
