Chapter 13: Walking Out

I pushed his hand off my chest.

It was not gentle, and he let me.

Under my ribs the strange pulse went on, and then it faltered, like a door closing in another room.

"Don't," I said.

"Ingrid."

"Don't say my name like that."

Torin stayed on his knees on the stone floor.

His face was grey.

"I didn't know," he said.

"I believe you."

"Then listen to me."

"I do believe you," I said, "and it doesn't change anything."

I stood up.

My legs held, and I was glad of it.

"I was seven," I said.

"My parents were in the ground for a week, and your father took me in and fed me soup at his table, and then he took my wolf and put it in his pocket."

The healer looked at the floor.

"I spent nineteen years thinking something was wrong with me," I said.

"I stood in a hallway at nineteen while you laughed at my glasses, and I thought, he's right, there's nothing in me at all."

"I never laughed at you."

"Your pack laughed, and you let them."

He flinched.

It was the first time I had seen that land.

"I was a coward," he said.

"Yes."

"I thought you were mine and I thought I'd lose you to it. So I made a show."

"You made me a show."

He did not argue.

Jonah and Hazel sat on the bench by the door with a bowl of dried apples the healer had given them.

Jonah had stopped chewing.

He was looking at me, then at Torin, and his eyes were pale gold at the edges.

I crouched in front of them.
