Chapter 6: Thirty Days
I closed the shop at noon and put the twins to bed in my room with the blinds down.
Then I packed.
I had a go-bag under the bed that I had kept ready for seven years, with cash, two birth certificates and a change of clothes for each of us.
I had never once thought I would use it.
I zipped it, and someone knocked on the back door.
It was Briony, with a white box tied in ribbon.
"Don't shut it," she said, putting her foot in the gap.
"Please. I came alone. Torin doesn't know."
"I don't want to talk to you."
"I brought lemon cake."
She held up the box and smiled the same smile as in the shop.
I should have shut the door.
But I had spent seven years wondering what I had done wrong in the hallway that morning, and some stubborn part of me still wanted her to be what she had been.
"Five minutes," I said.
She came into my kitchen and set the cake on the table.
Her eyes went around the room, to the high chair I had never thrown out, the twins' shoes lined up by the door, and the frayed cardigan on the hook.
"You look tired," she said gently.
"Seven years of two kids will do that."
"I'm sorry I never found you. I looked, you know."
"Did you?"
"Torin did, anyway. He hasn't been the same since you left."
She turned the bracelet on her wrist.
"He's been so angry. He thinks you stole from him."
"I didn't steal anything. He paid me."
"Paid you?" Briony said.
"With what?"
"Eight thousand dollars, in an envelope."
