Chapter 8: Who Held the Phone

Ingrid's POV

In the morning I found my daughter sitting on the kitchen counter, swinging her feet, giving the Alpha of Hollowbrook orders.

"No, you have to crack it on the side, not on the top."

"I did crack it on the side."

"It's still got shell in it."

Torin stood at the stove in his shirtsleeves with an egg in one hand and a fork in the other.

He had flour on his forearm.

He did not look up when I came in.

"She says I'm doing it wrong," he said.

"You are," I said.

"I've been told by two experts now."

Jonah sat at the table with his book open and did not look up either, but the corner of his mouth moved.

I took the egg out of Torin's hand without letting my fingers touch his.

I had decided that overnight.

"Ingrid, I need to talk to you," he said.

"Not in front of them."

"After."

Hazel finished her pancake and went to the garden window.

A deer stood on the lawn, quite still, looking at the house.

"Can I go see?" she asked.

"Stay where I can see you," I said.

She went out in her socks, and the deer did not run.

Torin watched her through the glass.

"Nobody taught her that," he said quietly.

"She's always been good with animals."

"It isn't good with animals."

I let that go for now.

When Jonah had followed his sister out, Torin turned to face me.

He had a leather folder in his hand, and he set it on the counter between us.

"I found this last night," he said.

"Read the line I marked."

I read it.

Withdrawn, cash, 8,000. For T.
