Chapter 25: Don't Swallow
It didn't hurt yet.
That was how I knew it was bad.
Aveline let go of the handle and stepped back. Her hands were shaking.
"You ruined it," she said. "You ruined everything. Again."
My knees gave.
Morvran caught me before I hit the stone.
He went down with me onto the grass beside the altar, holding me across his lap, one hand flat on my side around the knife.
His face was gray. Grayer than the night of the white scale.
"No," he said. "No, no, no."
Then he lifted his head and roared.
It wasn't a man's sound.
It came up out of the serpent in him, out of six hundred years, and went out across the sea.
The gulls went up off the rocks screaming.
And all along the headland path, all through the cliff woods, lanterns opened.
Twenty lights. Then forty.
A long line of fire from the trees to the altar, so bright I could see the grass.
Aveline turned and ran.
She ran straight into it.
The feeders came out of the dark with their lanterns.
They closed round her.
Somebody took the lantern out of her hand.
Somebody else held her arms.
Half of them broke off and ran down the path toward the academy.
