Chapter 30: Claim Me Again
"What's wrong with my apron?" I said.
"Nothing. I love your apron. Wear something else."
He went out before I could ask anything more.
Kerensa came in from the back room with a cat under each arm.
"What did he want?"
"He wants me on the headland at sunset in something that isn't an apron."
Kerensa put the cats down very carefully.
"Oh," she said. "Oh, El."
"What?"
"Nothing." Her face was doing something strange. "I'll lend you my green dress. Don't argue. Go and wash your hair. You've got goat in it."
I'd been back to the headland twice since Rift Night.
Once, the week after, with Kerensa, so I'd stop dreaming about it.
Once, alone, to look at the black stone in the daylight and make sure it was only a stone.
It looked different now.
The fishermen had put a bench at the edge of the cliff, for watching the boats come in.
Beside it stood a white lantern post that the harbor boys lit at dusk.
Somebody had planted sea pinks round the altar. They'd taken, and were coming up pink and thick at the foot of the black stone.
It had stopped being the place where I died.
