Chapter 6: Whose Beast
Our mother arrived at eleven, in black, with three trunks.
She didn't come to my room.
She went straight to Aveline's, and I heard the two of them laughing through the wall of the north tower stairwell as I went down.
At noon the Great Hall was full again.
The tables were pushed back. The Council sat on the dais in their gray robes, with the Headmistress at the end.
Aveline sat in the front row in pale blue, with Leofric beside her.
He looked worse. His hair had lost its shine. He kept his hands in his sleeves.
Our mother sat on Aveline's other side and didn't look at me once.
I stood alone in the middle of the floor with Morvran beside me.
He'd borrowed a black coat from somewhere. It was too short in the sleeves.
"You look very respectable," Kerensa had told him that morning.
"I look like a funeral that ran out of money," he'd said.
The eldest councillor read Aveline's petition aloud.
The deed. The stone given by House Tremayne to its younger daughter, at eleven, as her property.
"The serpent is mine," Aveline said, standing. "My sister took it from me while I was distracted by my own Waking. She knew it was mine. She has always wanted whatever I have."
Somebody in the benches snorted.
"You refused it," I said. "In front of two hundred people."
"I refused to bond it. I never gave up ownership. It was going to the pits under my name, as my property, for my house to sell."
That was clever.
That was our mother's cleverness.
If the Council ruled him Tremayne property, the bond was void, and the shield on my blood went with it.
I looked at Leofric.
He was watching me with half-closed eyes.
"Lady Tremayne," the councillor said. "Do you wish to speak?"
