Chapter 5: The Wedding

The wedding took place eleven days later, in the great hall of Skarreth Hold, before the whole council.

Linnea stood at the front in a gown of grey silk that Perpetua's seamstresses had sewn overnight.

A hundred lords and ladies filled the benches, and not one of them looked pleased.

"A tanner's girl," a woman whispered behind her fan. "In the Frostmere crypt."

"Six years we waited for a duchess," a lord said, "and he picks up a stray."

Linnea heard every word.

Aldric stood beside her in black and silver, his hand steady under hers.

The priest raised his book.

Before he could speak, the great doors boomed open.

Odile Ravenshaw swept into the hall in a fur-trimmed coat, with two footmen at her back.

"Stop this wedding!" she cried. "I am the girl's lawful guardian!"

Gasps rolled down the benches.

Linnea felt her stomach turn over.

"She was promised in marriage to Baron Hask," Odile said, and she wept on cue. "She ran away like a thief, and now I am told she stole a duke's bed. I only ask what is owed to a poor widow."

"What is owed," Aldric said, very quietly.

"A bride price share, Your Grace. Four hundred crowns was the contract. I have had to return the purse, and I am ruined."

Linnea laughed.

It carried across the hall, and heads turned.
