Chapter 16: Whose Car

The family room on the fourth floor had a green sofa, a box of tissues and a window onto a gray Swiss afternoon.

I sat in the armchair and told everyone else to find a seat.

Philip took the windowsill. Bruno stood by the door. Giulia sat on the sofa with her coat still on.

Adriano remained standing in the middle of the carpet.

"I'll ask, and you'll answer," I said. "Bruno will tell me if you leave anything out."

"Understood."

"Whose car were my parents in?"

"My father's."

He said it to my face, without pausing.

"The Costanzos' car wouldn't start outside the restaurant on Court Street. My father put your mother and father into his own car and sent his driver to take them home. Then he took a taxi."

"Why?"

"He liked your father. He said a man who works nights on a pier shouldn't be standing in the rain."

Each fact came one at a time, and I took each one.

"The bomb was for him," I said.

"The men who put it under the hood thought it was my father's car, with my father in it. It was."

"It was Aldo."

"Yes."

"How do you know?"

"The driver survived the blast. He lived almost seven more years with a bad back and a worse conscience. Last October his lungs gave out, and he asked for me. A nurse stood in the room while he told me Aldo Donati paid him to leave the engine running."
