Chapter 18: Rehearsal

On Thursday morning, Channing's security man stood in front of the east wing doors with a clipboard and two guards.

"Approved personnel only," he said.

"I'm the producer," I said. "This is my walkthrough."

"The pyro permit names a safety officer."

"Who?"

"Me." He turned the clipboard around.

The permit was a single sheet, and Paulette's signature sat on the bottom line.

"Mr. Channing Sorrell has closed the wing to everyone but the vendor and the safety officer," he said. "You're not on the list."

"Then put me on it."

"I can't."

"You can write a name."

"I won't," he said, and his flat face did not change at all.

Behind me, my team stood in the hall with their equipment cases.

The lighting designer breathed out through her nose.

"We could call Elliott," whispered the stage manager.

"He'd come," I said. "And then Channing's man would call Channing, and Channing would have a fight on camera to point at."
