Chapter 8: Garbage Bags on the Lawn

Dot came for them in the bakery van, with a stack of towels on the passenger seat and a tire iron under her arm.

"I didn't know what I'd need," she said.

"You don't need the tire iron," Matilda said.

"Let me have the option."

They reached Ocean Avenue as the rain thinned to a drizzle.

The black bags stood along the front of the house in a long wet row.

Somebody had slit one open, and a blue dress lay across the grass.

Up and down the street, neighbours stood on their porches with their phones out.

Zach was on the front step, dry, with his arms folded.

His mother stood beside him under a black umbrella.

"Matilda," Judith called. "Don't make this worse. The house is in Zach's name. We have every right."

Matilda got out of the van and walked up the lawn.

She did not look at either of them.

She knelt by the first bag and pulled it open, and the smell of wet wool and cedar came out.

It was her grandmother's quilt.

It had been folded in the cedar chest for six years, and now it was soaked through.

She lifted it out and held it against her chest.

Then she stood up on the wet grass with it in her arms and turned to face the street.

She was not a person who spoke to crowds.

She spoke in the same level voice she used to take an order.

"Hello," she said. "I'm Matilda, from number fourteen. Some of you have bought bread from me."

A woman on the porch next door lowered her phone.

"My husband took a hundred and eighty thousand dollars out of my grandmother's bakery," Matilda said. "He paid his girlfriend's rent with it."
