Chapter 10: What She Wanted

At four that afternoon my phone buzzed on her kitchen table.

It was Marissa.

"Milly is sleeping at your mother's tonight. Don't make a scene."

I read it twice and set the phone face down.

"She's keeping her from me," I said.

Myra was standing at the sink, rinsing a mug, with her back to me.

She was in a gray T-shirt and old leggings now, barefoot, her hair loose around her shoulders.

It was the first time I had seen her hair down.

It was darker than it looked in a ponytail, a deep copper, and it reached the middle of her back.

"Then keep your head tonight," she said without turning. "We'll deal with it tomorrow."

"I can't keep my head."

"I know."

"I keep seeing her in that car. I keep seeing him in my kitchen at Christmas."

"I know." She set the mug down. "I keep seeing it too."

She dried her hands on a dish towel and turned.

Her green eyes were red around the edges, and there was no pity in them, only a hard, awake look.

"I've been angry for four months and sad for five minutes," she said. "Do you know what I want?"

"What?"

"I want to stop thinking."

She crossed the kitchen in three steps.

She put one hand on my chest and pushed me back against the counter.

My heart started pounding under her palm.

"Myra."

"Don't pretend you don't want this."

"I want this."

"Good."

She kissed me.

It was hungry, angry, a little clumsy, and it tasted like coffee.

I kissed her back with everything I had been holding down for two days.

My hands found her waist and pulled her against me.

She made a low sound in her throat that I felt in my knees.

"Bedroom," she said against my mouth.

"Which way?"

"Down the hall. Don't talk."

She led me by the shirt.

Her bedroom was small and white, with a quilt on the bed and the blinds half closed.

There was a photo of her and Colby on the dresser, at their wedding.
