Chapter 15: Her Hand on the Wheel
Myra did not say a word to Colby.
She took my car keys out of my hand, put hers in my other hand, and said, "Get Milly."
I left my own car in my mother's gravel and found my daughter behind the garage, feeding a dog a piece of her sandwich.
I carried her to Myra's car and buckled her into the booster that was still in the back seat.
Selma stood on the porch the whole time and did not stop us.
She had no way to, with three witnesses and a groundskeeper, and she knew it.
Myra drove out of the pines with both hands tight on the wheel.
Milly fell asleep before the highway, her cheek against the window, the triceratops under her chin.
"Where are we going?" I said.
"The woman two doors down from me offered to sit with her," Myra said. "She said so after the driveway."
"The one with the coffee cup."
"She baked a lasagna and left it on my porch. I think she's decided to be on our side."
At Myra's curb, the woman came down her own steps in slippers and took Milly out of the booster without waking her.
