Chapter 20: Static Fire
The freshmen were looking at me.
So was everybody else.
The birthday girl had her hands over her mouth.
I walked out onto the pad.
The concrete was still hot through my boots.
I crouched by the split casing and didn't touch it.
"Nobody's hurt," I said. "That's the first thing."
"Nobody's hurt," the birthday girl repeated, shakily.
"Second thing. We have one more flight motor, and we're not lighting it until we know what happened to this one." I stood up. "Third thing. Pancakes. My treat. Nobody thinks on an empty stomach."
Somebody laughed, the wet kind.
Waylon came up beside me and bumped his shoulder against mine.
"Captain," he said quietly.
"Don't. If you're nice to me right now, I'll cry in front of the freshmen."
"Okay." He looked down at the motor. "Your chamber's still too short."
"Your opinion's still too long."
He almost smiled.
I called Gran from the pancake place.
I didn't ask her to come.
I just described the sound, the cough in the roar.
She was quiet for a second.
"Like a diesel dropping a cylinder?"
