Chapter 27: Eighty
Truman didn't hand the letter to anyone.
He climbed the stage steps with it, one at a time, on his cane.
I came down to help him, and he let me, which he had never once done.
At the podium he put his glasses on and read it into the microphone himself.
Every word.
Each charge landed on the room, and nobody reached for a glass.
Then the line with his thumb under it.
His voice didn't shake on his grandson's name.
When he finished, he folded the letter in half and put it in his breast pocket, behind my gardenia.
"That's the last thing I'm going to say about that boy tonight," he said. "Now. Somebody bring me my cake."
There was a beat where nobody knew what to do.
Then Annabeth, at the back, started clapping.
The whole room followed her.
They wheeled the cake out from the kitchen, four tiers, white, with a sugar smokestack on top that said RADFORD down the side.
Truman stood over it while three hundred people sang.
Before he blew, he lifted his hand.
"One more thing. I made my heirs a promise last year in a lawyer's office. A Radford baby by tonight, and my chair goes to the man who brings it." He looked down at August, at the foot of the stage. "It was the stupidest thing I ever said, and I've said a lot of them."
People laughed, carefully.
"There's no condition. There never should have been. My board will choose the next chairman in the new year, on merit, with the doors open." He looked at the directors' table. "And there's no meeting in my card room tonight. Go home full."
Then he blew out all eighty candles in two breaths, and the room roared.
The band started up again.
Truman came down the steps and held out his free hand to me.
