Chapter 7: Clayton's POV

Clayton's POV

On Thursday night I did my rounds at midnight, at one, and at two.

I did them slowly and wrote everything down, because the log was the one thing in that building I didn't want to lie in.

At three-fifteen the aide on my floor put her head on her folded arms at the desk.

By three-thirty she was snoring.

I stood in the hall and looked at the red light on the camera over the fire door.

That camera had been pointing at the ceiling since a floor buffer knocked it in January. I had never reported it.

I told myself I had only been lazy.

Seven months ago I read a chart that said a woman had screamed her son's name for nine hours.

I read the next line, and the next, and I understood the sedation order was bigger than the symptoms.

Then I clocked out and went home and did nothing.

That's the part I'd tell a judge, if one ever asked me.

I went to her door and opened it.

She was already dressed, sitting on the edge of the bed with her shoes in her lap.

I had pulled her bag out of the property room on Wednesday while the clerk was at lunch. The jeans were loose on her now. She had belted them with a strip torn from a sheet.

"Ready?" I asked.

"I've been ready since September."

She stood.

I put my coat over her shoulders. It hung to her knees.

"Walk behind me," I said. "If anyone speaks, you're my sister's friend and you're sick. Say nothing."

"I've gotten very good at saying nothing."

I looked at her once more.
