Chapter 15: The Account
The hangar did not erupt.
It did something worse, which was go on being quiet while four hundred people looked at a man they had trusted for twelve years.
Bryson stood on the stage with his mouth slightly open.
Lydia stood at table one with her fist closed around my pendant.
Mrs. Hartnett took her cane, stood up, and walked to the foot of the stage without any help.
The tech gave her a microphone before she asked.
"I buried my only child twenty months ago," she said.
Her voice was thin, and it carried to the back wall.
"Chris told me what he saw in his last weeks, and I called it the morphine. I owe him that apology and I will make it on my own time."
She turned her head toward Lydia.
"The house on Bridgeway Road is mine. I paid for it, and I let Bryson put his name on it because I trusted him. My lawyer will have both your names off it by Monday. You will be out by the first of the month."
"Mother Hartnett, please. I have nowhere..."
"You have a Fund with my son's name on it. As of tonight, it doesn't."
A murmur went through the tables.
"The stipend stops tonight, and so does the name. Anyone here who gave to the Hartnett Fund will get their money back from me personally, and I'll say that in writing to every crew base."
Lydia's mouth worked.
"You can't."
"I can. I'm his mother."
Nobody argued with that.
Mrs. Hartnett handed the microphone back to the tech.
Lydia looked around the room for a face that would take her side.
