Chapter 19: Who She Is
"Yes," I said. "It's true."
I stood in the doorway of the kitchen with a bag of flour on my hip and Bridget staring at me through the pass.
"Do you want to comment?"
"I do. Have you got a pen?"
"Go ahead."
"My name is Mara Linden, and I own a bakery. Levi Shaw is my fiancé. I found out he chairs the group that owns the airline on Tuesday, from his phone."
"And Captain Baxter's claim that you had him removed?"
"I asked Levi not to touch his job. He didn't. The president of the airline did that, after he heard Bryson say, to four hundred of his own crew, why he picked me."
The reporter had stopped typing.
"I'm not the story," I said. "I was a cover story. For four years a man used me so nobody would look at what he was doing, and I'm not going to be anybody's cover again, his or mine."
"Can I print that?"
"Print all of it."
I hung up and found Levi in the doorway of the shop with his coat still on.
"I heard," he said. "I'm sorry. This is my name in the paper."
"It's our name," I said. "I said fiancé. You don't mind?"
His face did something complicated.
"No," he said. "I don't mind."
The airline held its review of Bryson on Monday at ten, in the same hangar, at a long folding table under the white lights that nobody had taken down.
It was open to the crew, and the crew had come.
I sat in the fifth row in a gray wool dress, with Bridget on my left.
Levi was not at the table.
He had told the board he was recused, and he sat in the back by the doors, with his hands on his knees.
