Chapter 4: The Sapphire

"I never stopped loving you."

Levi said it to the mug in my hands, and then he made himself look at me.

I forgot to breathe.

"Levi."

"I know." He gave a short, embarrassed laugh. "The timing is terrible."

"It might be the worst timing anyone has ever had."

That got half a smile out of him, and then it went away.

"I tried to move on after you picked Bryson," he said. "I dated. I worked eighteen-hour days. I told myself it would wear off."

He shook his head.

"It didn't."

I couldn't speak.

"I've watched you spend four years waiting for that man to put you first," he said. "I'm not telling you tonight because I expect you to fix anything. I'm telling you because I'm done pretending."

Then he reached into his jacket and took out a small velvet box.

My heart started pounding.

"Levi, no."

"I bought it in March."

He opened it.

A sapphire sat inside, old-fashioned, ringed with small diamonds. It wasn't big or loud, and it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.

"You bought a ring in March," I said, "for me."

"I saw it in a window and couldn't walk past."

He got down on one knee on my living room rug, between the coffee table and the Merlot.

"This isn't because he hurt you," he said. "I'm not trying to rescue you. If you say no, I'll drive you to work Monday and we'll never talk about it."
