Chapter 14: On the Table
I stood up.
The chair scraped, and two hundred people stopped talking.
"Mrs. Tarrant," the dealer said, "the hand is live."
"Hold it, please."
I walked around the end of the table.
Castiglioni turned his head to follow me, amused.
Cormac stopped smiling when I was three steps away.
"Lena. Sit down."
"I made that collar," I said.
He understood a half second too late.
His hand flew to his neck, and I was faster.
I caught the clear wire under the velvet and pulled.
It came out of his ear with a small wet click.
Cormac yelped.
At the end of the wire hung a bead no bigger than a lentil, flesh-colored and warm.
I carried it back to the table in two fingers.
I set it on the green felt, in the white circle of the lamp, between Castiglioni's chips and mine.
