Chapter 14: Cider Day
By nine on Cider Day, the Sedlak barn had four hundred people in it, and the press hadn't turned once.
Trucks lined both sides of the county road, and kids ran between the hay bales with paper cups.
The woman from the post office was selling raffle tickets at a card table by the door.
"Two dollars," she said to me, with a face of perfect innocence. "Winner gets a basket."
"What's in the basket?"
"Surprise."
"Which surprise?"
"Don't ask a woman her business," she said.
I bought three tickets and walked on before I learned something I didn't want to know.
The press was my grandfather's, a cast iron screw with a wooden bed, black with a hundred years of apples.
Ned and my mother had it greased and ready.
Abram stood next to it in a clean flannel, with a bin of his own apples at his feet.
"Those are my Spies," he said.
"They're better than I expected."
