Chapter 13: Lanterns
By seven o'clock on Saturday the yard was lit.
Paper lanterns hung from the shop eaves, from the crane arm, from the masts of the boats on the hard.
A four-piece band played on a plank stage at the end of the dock, and two hundred people stood in the grass with plates of crab cake and cups of punch.
I came down the shop steps in the yellow dress.
I had considered not wearing it.
Then I decided that Dean should see exactly what he had picked out.
Heads turned as I crossed the grass.
Women I had known since childhood caught my hands and told me I looked like my mother.
Men lifted their cups.
The foreman, a gray-haired man with a barrel chest who had run my yard's crew for twenty years, kissed my cheek.
"You all right, girl?" he asked quietly.
"I'm fine."
"You don't look fine. You look like you're about to take a boat out in a storm."
"Maybe I am."
He studied me for a second.
