Chapter 21: Roz at the Gate
The visitor lobby was a cool marble room with a row of wooden benches.
Roz sat on the last bench, alone, in a wrinkled blue maternity smock and a pair of scuffed flats.
Her hair hung limp.
There was a bruise on her forearm the size of a thumb, and her face had the scraped look of someone who hadn't slept in days.
She looked up when I came in and stood so fast that she swayed.
"Don't," I said. "Sit."
She sat.
I took the bench opposite, three feet away, and put my hands on my knees.
A sailor at the desk pretended to read a newspaper.
"You came a long way," I said.
"Four buses."
"Why?"
"Because I didn't know where else to go."
Her voice was hoarse.
"Mama doesn't speak to me. She says I made my bed. Daddy sends money, but he can't come. The bakery fired me after the party." She laughed, thin and bitter. "You'd be surprised how fast a town can turn."
"I wouldn't."
"No. I don't suppose you would."
She picked at the hem of her smock.
"Dean got out on bail," she said. "Cavan's mother put the house up. They've got him in the attic on Duke of Gloucester Street."
